Rotations (for Advent)

Category: Poetrydryvetyme @ 16:06

The earth herself spins.
Greens rooted & connected to
Browns that wend their way,
Unceasing & undying,
Time upon time
From outward in and
To inward out.

The boughs & branches,
The ground & grass
Frame the seemingly perpetual conflict
That exists between light & dark.
One is always chasing to the other
Through the skies
Through the seasons, and
Through our hearts.

So, as our innermost selves
Strive towards the light,
Fleeing from the darkness,
Let us embrace these elements,
Set down upon the earth:
Ever-present.
Ever green.

The leaf & the limb do love the light.

Recognition (For Advent)

Category: Poetrydryvetyme @ 16:05

Awake!
The wick is lit,
Filling up the empty,
The looming absence
With a glow,
With a shine,
With a space where we can finally see.

Behold!
The light is here,
Giving us a hope,
A chance for newness,
Even in the dark,
Even in the quiet,
Even though it seems so all alone.

Arise!
Do not fear.
You are not the only one,
The solitary person
Who has seen,
Who has felt,
Who has realized that the flicker wants to grow.

And now!
Meet the light
Find your place inside,
Within.
Take that light.
Be that light.
Bring that light to others.
Spread that light.

One stands in the darkness, but many consume it.

The Middle

Sticks & stones
It takes more than that
to make him feel a thing.

All alone.
She prefers the false solace
that her lonely heart brings.

All that was held out is crushed.
All that was held back is withered.
The middle has disappeared.

Living Under the Influence of Jean Valjean

Category: Poetrydryvetyme @ 18:39

Vandals can’t handle
The grace that comes from being pardoned.
Burglars can’t hurdle
The mercy that results from forgiveness.

All it takes sometimes is saying, “I’m sorry,”
But none of us know quite what that means.
All it takes sometimes is hearing “You are forgiven,”
But none of us can fathom quite how that works.

Slaves can’t take
The freedom that comes when all debts are paid.
The bound-up can’t round-up
The love it takes to throw the chains away.

What we need we do not understand.
What we receive we do not deserve.
What we give pales in comparison.
And how we live is such a poor account.
