The punk, metal, and hardcore fan inside of me wanted to laugh right in the face of Mighty Tiger when I was first introduced to the sweet, harmonized coos of this quintet. Western Theater is pitch-perfect pastoral pop in nearly every sense of those adjectives, up to and including the inclusion of Merseybeat, Beatle-pop, and ‘60s surf rock. When you factor in sizable levels of Sufjan Stevens, Arcade Fire, and the sort of overly earnest indie-folk propagated by artists on Saddle Creek and Team Love, it’s almost enough to make me run screaming for my Jawbreaker records.
