White Car EP

What I enjoy most about the self-titled debut EP by White Car is that it’s an exercise in ‘80s-inflected synth-pop minimalism that never once tries to go over-the-top. Instead, this duo spends most of its time crafting mysteriously sexy beats, ones that pare well with stellar vocals that recall the best of Prince, Gore, and Gahan. The entire effect is akin to an artist delivering a cunning nod to his/her dense collection of influences, yet never jumping into bed with them.

Invisible Violence

At this juncture in contemporary music, it’s beyond easy to harass dance-rock bands for being a few years behind the curve. Not only has everyone moved on to newer, bigger, and (supposedly) hipper sounds, but those acts still churning out various forms of third-wave post-punk aren’t bringing anything new to the table. Sure, there might be a part of me that still wants to dig on these sounds (since we ALL did when Bloc Party and The Rapture first burst onto the scene six-plus years ago), but if you’re unwilling (or unable) to display any semblance of growth in your aesthetic, you’re simply inviting music fans and critics alike to dismiss you out of hand.

Nitetime Rainbows EP

As I declared back when I wrote my review of Ashes Grammar, I felt that A Sunny Day In Glasgow could have deepened the impact of that excellent record by dividing it up into five different EP’s. Doing so would have allowed people to more effectively absorbed the subtle intricacies and details that gave the flow of the songs their truest shape. The Nitetime Rainbows EP serves as ample evidence of the veracity of that bit of critical analysis, as “Nitetime Rainbows” anchors down three B-sides and three remixes, by giving plenty of room in which the delightful swoops and swells of sound can play.

These New Puritans – Hidden

Hidden

White kids have been claiming to love rap music ever since Run DMC collaborated with Aerosmith back in the late ‘80s. Granted, industry data can verify those claims, as affluent teenaged suburbanites have accounted for a prodigious portion of rap/hip-hop sales for the past twenty years. Yet, despite those sales tracking figures and the innumerable “Best Music of the 2000’s” lists created by fans and critics alike, you really don’t hear too many Caucasian artists actually implementing the tenets of hip-hop into their music (with the obvious exceptions of rap-rock, nu-metal, Eminem, and other less talented white rappers). The worst part is that when various indie-pop acts start inviting Afro-pop, worldbeat, and similar influences into their sound, people begin accusing them of theft, a lack of creativity, and/or some subtle form of post-colonial racist tendencies.

Yup, it’s Noon on a Monday, which means that I have a few new tunes and moving pictures for you. Feel free to talk to me in the comments about what you liked, didn’t like, and what else you might like to hear in the future. Personally, I’m digging “Red Sea” from Clogs, and I’m more than excited that Cap’n Jazz are getting back together for some reunion shows (though plenty of folks are also jazzed to see Pavement playing various festivals and events all summer).

Please note: there are two GREAT records up for full, officially approved download today: the self-titled record by Communipaw (Read my review here!) and Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo by It’s A King Thing.
