For starters, we’re going to ignore the relative hype surrounding the actual release of Contra, which is probably one of the more anticipated sophomore records being released in 2010. Hosts of music critics and fans alike never understood the adulation and adoration initially poured upon Vampire Weekend back in 2008, while others fawned over “Oxford Comma” and “A-Punk.” So, any and all of the attention this quartet is bound to attract will be automatically misunderstood and dismissed out of hand by the detractors. And that’s fine by me, since any band worth its salt is going to (and should) create conversation and controversy with each and every release.
