Houston Rock Poster Art Exhibition

Category: H-Town Rock,Music In My Earsdryvetyme @ 12:00

For those of you who have ever wondered about the sorts of people who spend their time and energy designing posters for rock shows and tours around the nation, you’d be surprised to learn that many of those folks make their homes in Houston, TX. Thus, since I take every opportunity to remind the world that there are hordes of creative people living in my fair city (despite how we’re portrayed in popular media), I want to make my readers aware of an upcoming exhibition entitled Houston Rock Poster Art, 2000-2010.

The event is slated to be held at Caroline Collective is set to run from November 20th, 2009 through the end of this calendar year. Under the expert curating acumen of Philip Beck and Matthew Wettergreen, the hosts of KTRU’s “Revelry Report,” the entry deadline for the show is November 1st, 2009, with the only terms for eligibility being that any and all rock poster art must have been made between 2000 to present.

Interested artists should make their submissions in the form of image files and be sent via email to Philip Beck and Matthew Wettergreen at pfbeck@gmail.com and mwettergreen@gmail.com.

From the official press release: Caroline Collective is seeking rock poster art from the Houston music community over the past 10 years. This show will showcase the trends and diversity of rock poster art in Houston over the first decade of the new century. All mediums of rock poster art (wheat paste, digital offset prints, silkscreens, photocopies, handmade) are welcome and encouraged for submission. All of the work included in this show must be for Houston rock shows occurring between 2000 and 2010.

This music lover is quite excited to see all of the outstanding artwork that be unearthed as a result of this call for contributions for the exhibition. I might have chosen words as my medium of choice for discussing music, but I certainly do know a great piece of artwork when I see it. H-Town Represent!

The Pattern Prism

As I may have mentioned before, I have two brothers who are intensely into heavy progressive rock; as in, I have two brothers who are heavily influenced by the music of Dream Theater and Rush. While I can most assuredly appreciate the technical precision behind the music and I do stand in awe of the depth of talent consistently displayed by gentlemen like Jordan Rudess, John Myung, and Neil Peart, the style often does nothing for me. Typically, with most prog rock, it comes down to there being one glaring aspect of any given band or song that flies in the face of what I might find appealing in the music as a whole (with Dream Theater, it is most certainly the voice of James Labrie). Yes, I fully realize that such a claim can be made about most any style of music out there (especially in some of the trendy indie/hipster stuff I enjoy), but when you choose to craft music that intentionally stands outside the mainstream (and do so gladly), you’re opening your art up for criticism and misunderstanding on the silliest of grounds.
