Adam Marsland is one of those musicians who has all of the trappings of a deep pool of experience and a thousand-mile long resume in the music industry. There’s no denying his accolades – Marsland has been described by SPIN as “a high-energy cross between Brian Wilson, Paul Stanley, and Elton John.” Though I don’t think I would personally deliver a label as ostentatious as that, he does have a wealth of experience and connections. As he’s performed with Evie Sands (who in her early days performed and hung out with Johnny and June Cash) and received production help from Mark Linnett (a producer of The Beach Boys), he’s obviously no spring chicken on the music scene.

It Came From The Video Store – Meet The Feebles

Category: Cinema In My Eyesdryvetyme @ 07:00

Tired of trips to crowded theaters full of noisy kids and overpriced food? Had your fill of vapid reality shows on TV? Wondering what to stock your Netflix queue with? Every week, Robert Saucedo’s “It Came From the Video Store” will point you in the direction of a movie that is worth seeing and should be available in a video store near you.

Meet The Feebles

When it was first announced that New Zealand filmmaker Peter Jackson would be directing Lord of the Rings for New Line Cinema, the world of fandom was divided between those who asked “Who?!?” and those who asked “Are you freaking kidding me?!?”. Before Lord of the Rings, Jackson was primarily known for his low budget, disturbingly gruesome, yet oh-so-entertaining horror films. The very idea that the man who had brought you such films as Meet the Feebles would be chronicling the exploits of Frodo Baggins boggled the mind.

Songs About People I Know

Amidst a decade filled with a seemingly infinite number of acts strip-mining the ‘80s for every possible hook, look, posture, pose, and riff, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart have put on a master class in how to bring music from the past into the present and future and do so with intelligence, enthusiasm, and ability. It’s not about simply studying history so as to recreate the wheel; bands should be building their own vibrant, re-imagined version of a classic sound using the original instructions, those history lessons, and their own actual musical talents. Much like its Yankee peers, Stricken City seems to possess the acumen that will help it rise above the gaggle of wannabes, pretenders, and otherwise boring acts that threaten to drown them out.

Best Records of the 2000’s

Category: Life As I See It, Music In My Earsdryvetyme @ 07:00

Editor’s Note: This post is part of the 10 Blogs, 1 Decade collective, where ten different indie, DIY blogs like mine post their favorite records from this decade. Yesterday’s list was provided by the fine folks at Count Me Out, and tomorrow’s can be found at Orange Alert.

This decade (also known as the ’00s and/or the Aughts in some circles) has brought about, in the eyes, mind, and ears of some people, a veritable revolution in how people learn about, listen to, and create music. Granted, since October brought to the blogosphere the extensive set of lists from Pitchfork, some would say that anyone’s lists that followed those would be either full of copycat selections or redundant. Whatever – I started working on this list back in June.

Whatever the case may be, here is the list of my favorite records from the past 10 years. Yes, you might have seen some of these records in other places, but that’s what makes them the best and most memorable from this decade. Many of these albums helped define, propagate, and develop the music blogosphere (and were helped by it), but just because a record might seem to be over-hyped in some quarters, that doesn’t and shouldn’t diminish its power and high quality.

As is my modus operandi, this list is presented to you in alphabetical order (last name of a solo artist first!), mostly because I don’t have it in me to declare anything as the (insert any number of superfluous, hyperbolic adjectives here) best, standing tall above everything else. Also, please note that I’ve only included one record from any given artist/group – I might want to throw in multiple projects from Radiohead, Animal Collective, and/or TV On The Radio, but I decided to limit myself to one.

In general, I’d rather celebrate and enjoy all of these records for what they are – great records (i.e. my favorite) from a rather solid all-around decade.
