Sam Billen – Tokyo Sessions EP

Sam Billen
Tokyo Sessions EP
Self-Released; 2009

Guest Contributor: Jen Broadwell

Any sucker for a soft berceuse and some poignant lyrics will instantly find pleasure in the beautiful narratives found within the Toyko Sessions EP from Sam Billen. These folky jingles are based on direct experiences and events from Billen’s time spent in Tokyo with his family. Aware of the setting that motivated the lyrics, most listeners will quickly and easily be able to formulate interpretations of their meanings. After all, the album’s most praiseworthy component is its lyrics and the stories they tell. The inexpensive acoustic guitar and laptop computer, which Billen disclosed as the two prominent tools utilized throughout the process of making this album, could take things only so far. His words did the rest.

My 1,000th Post

Category: Life As I See Itdryvetyme @ 12:00

I have been operating this website since February 2005, and it started off in traditional blog fashion, complete with me pontificating about whatever the hell I was thinking and feeling at the exact moment a post went up. Since then, I’ve rambled about politics, theology, my family, my friends, and music. I’ve posted pictures from my two summers working at a Boy Scout Summer Camp, along with various attempts to concoct a screenplay and young adult book series. I’ve also published my commentaries-as-bible-studies on the book of Genesis and other selections from the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. This place has been many things to many people, but I’ve always tried to make it an extension of how I see the world.

Thus, I am proud to say that this is my 1,000th post here at Dryvetyme Onlyne. And yes, you can now cue the balloon-drop, streamers, whistles, funny hats, and cake. This is a celebration.

Many of you have been with me from the beginning, while others of you only found me since I shifted the scope of this website to being that of almost full-time music criticism/journalism back in January 2008. What began as one meager Blogspot site soon expanded to four when I tried to diversify my writing, and then thanks to long-term friend/confidant/technology guru Nathan Slatter, everything was eventually compressed into the site you see today. Other friends have provided untold and unsurpassed support along the way, including Lauran Kerr-Heraly, Andrea Rosselle, Robert Ham, Travis Ziebro, and the fine folks at Burnside Writers Collective. Last but not least, my mother, father, brothers, and wonderful girlfriend have provided me with countless hours of prayer, love, and encouragement as I pursue my passions and chase down my dreams.

So, thanks to you, dear readers, many of whom I know only as a mere tracking statistic, for sticking around and reading all of these days, months, and years. Here’s to 1,000 more posts!

Gareth Dickson – Collected Recordings

Gareth Dickson
Collected Recordings
Drifting Falling; 2009

Guest Contributor: Nathan Slatter

I’m reminded while listening to Gareth Dickson of folk music, as his talent for playing that style of guitar is quite prodigious. As I begin listening though, I do not find myself riveted to the music, evaluating each note that comes from his guitar or word that he vocalizes. Occasionally, he settles into a musical pose that is well worth listening to and does intrigue me, but that mood is often over shadowed by a rhythmic scratching on the strings of the guitar which to me are irritating more than enticing. One thing that I do like is that you can hear more than his music or singing. You can discern when and how he changes position on the neck of his guitar or even as he moves about while playing, and I do find this somehow more authentically interesting.

Oppressed By The Line – Kiku

Oppressed By The Line
Kiku
Drifting Falling; 2009

Oppressed by the Line: an interesting name to say the least, one that is the result of a quotation of Yves Klien – “I adopt the cause of the colour oppressed by the line”. It’s a great quotation and I do feel that the music emitting from my headphones actually finds itself well within the lines. Whether oppressed or not, I cannot speak with authority; however, I can describe the feelings and thoughts that crossed my mind while listening.
