As many of my Houston, TX readers might/should be aware (thanks to the efforts of Andrew Karnavas on behalf of his band Runaway Sun), the folks who run Austin City Limits Fest (aka ACL Fest) hold an open battle-of-the-bands styled competition called The Sound And The Jury. This is the third year for such an event and there is still plenty of time for bands to enter the competition and for fans to vote for their favorite band to earn an official slot as part of ACL Fest 2009.
Not only are bands still able to enter the competition through August 28th, the fans are able to go back to vote for their preferred entrant every day until polling is closed that same day. At the close of Round 1, the top 100 vote-earning bands will be brought before an official panel of judges who will reduce the number of bands down to 20. From there, another round of fan-based voting starts up to figure out who the top 5 bands might be. After that, there will be live Battle Of The Bands on September 30th to decide which band will go on to perform at ACL 2009 later that weekend.
Here’s a fun little video from last year’s competition that gives folks an idea of what’s going on this year. The fine folks at Austin City Limits want to encourage all interested bands to toss their names and music in to the hat, and hope that the fans of those bands light up the internet message boards with their votes and their comments.
As for me, while I might not be entering the competition or be part of the panel of judges for the event, I will certainly be present in Austin, TX on October 2nd-4th, 2009 for Austin City Limits Fest. How else will my readers be kept in the loop regarding the goings-on of one of the finest festivals this nation has to offer?
