The Last Thing You Forget

When I reviewed the Kingston 7” from Title Fight last year, I found myself enjoying the raucous brand of classic pop-punk these Pennsylvania kids had created. I loved the heart and energy with which the guys sang their tales of woebegone love. But when the three tracks of The Last Thing You Forgot 7” assaulted my ears earlier this week, it was immediately apparent that these boys had grown into men. The zippy double-time skate punk pacing is still present (for the most part), but the band has willingly embraced key elements of old-school punk and post-hardcore into the mix.

Metavari – Be One Of Us And Hear No Noise

Metavari
Be One Of Us And Hear No Noise
Crossroads of America; 2009

Within my first spin of Be One Of Us And Hear No Noise, I was instantly struck by the technical precision of Metavari’s highly intellectual brand of instrumental jazzy pop. It was then I realized that I wouldn’t be allowed to utter the term “post-rock” (according to its conventional definition) to describe what this band has created here. While this might be a lyric-less record, complete with the occasional over-the-top, reach-for-the-sky anthem, this trio seems much more interested in blending together organic instrumentation with programmed beats and various audio samples to create ethereal, yet still accessible, atmospheres that provide ample room for any given listener’s personal use or re-interpretation.

Jonesin’ – “Hi, We’re Jonesin’”

Jonesin’
“Hi, We’re Jonesin’”
Turn Up; 2009

Hi, We're Jonesin'

I’m a fan of the most excellent show How I Met Your Mother, with my favorite episode being “Slap Bet” (Season 2, Episode 9), mostly for introducing two key running jokes to the series: 1) the “slap bet” that exists between Marshall and Barney, and 2) the music of Robin Sparkles. According to the show’s chronology, Robin Sparkles was the stage name of character Robin Scherbatsky from her time as a mall-touring Canadian teenage pop star in the ‘90s. And yes, the show explicitly poked fun at Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, and Canadians when Robin stated that the ‘80s didn’t come to Canada until the mid-‘90s, explaining why teen girl pop stars were still singing in malls in Canada, much to the delight of Ted, Barney, Marshall, and Lily. The twist is that the anachronistic fake pop singer (with two videos, “Let’s Go To The Mall” and “Sandcastles In The Sand”) has a viral MySpace page in the real world that celebrates her “music.”

The Motorcycle Industry – Electric Education

The Motorcycle Industry
Electric Education
Self-Released; 2009

Besides straight-up classic pop, there is no style of music best attuned to poking fun of people than that of punk rock. Have you ever heard a shoegaze or doom metal outfit effectively toss around sarcastic remarks about someone or something? Probably not, mostly because the mood of those genres makes it difficult to have one’s tongue firmly planted in cheek. Maybe it’s the upbeat energy or the preternaturally counter-cultural tones of the music, but punk seemingly encourages you to have a sense of humor about the world around you, even if you’re rather disgusted by what you see.
