Thanks to the marvels of modern recording technology, it has become easier than ever before for a solo artist to record an album without the assistance of a full band (or even guest collaborators). But just because you can doesn’t mean you should: the backyard of the DIY Scene’s house is littered with musical dross and refuse of all shapes and sizes that should have never seen the light of the day. Not many solo performers are able first to shape fully formed songs on their own and then create them in a studio environment, taking care of the production duties themselves. It’s a heady task that’s fraught with the assorted pitfalls and perils that threaten to take down any adventurer who heads out sans support.
