Caroline Collective Hosts SXSW 2009 Preview Events

Category: H-Town Rock, Music In My Earsdryvetyme @ 09:00

From the fine folks at Caroline Collective, we have this information regarding two amazing events they are hosting in March concerning the Houston, TX music scene:

“We’re hard at work over here at Caroline Collective on some SXSW initiatives. In true last minute style, a venue for a Houston-focused party at SXSW has opened up and we’re populating it with Houston tech, music, and film people to provide a showing of who’s who in Houston and what our city has to offer. Caroline Collective is having a Bandcamp on Sunday to prepare bands for SXSW (press kit, photos, clean up website if they have one, copywriting, basic online presence) so, for everyone who has some time in between 1-3pm on Sunday, March 1st, 2009, and who would be willing to donate some services, please stop by Caroline. We’ll have food and drink. Please forward to anyone else you think would be interested.

If you are going to SXSW, please definitely try and make the pre-SXSW happy hour at Caroline Collective on March 12th, 2009 so you can meet other Houstonians attending.”

And yes, if you were wondering, I will be at both of them (and I hope you will be also).

Panesian Nights

Though I’ve never been nor never will be a regular club-goer, I am familiar with what makes for a solid night on the dance floor. Good dance music should properly ebb and flow throughout a myriad arrangement of peaks and valleys. Moreover, any DJ worth a damn who’s prepared to spin for a decent amount of time should know that his set can’t and shouldn’t be slamming all the time. You have to build up the crowd with precision, deliver the climax of the night with a smooth intensity, and then bring it all back down to a classy conclusion.

Baby

Friday Night Lights – while the term itself is a phrase often used to describe the atmosphere surrounding high school football games, it has entered into true modern cultural parlance on account of H. G. (Buzz) Bissinger’s tell-all expose of the Odessa, TX Permian High School Panthers’ 1988 season. In this book, the accompanying movie (starring Billy Bob Thornton as the conflicted coach of that team), and the subsequent NBC television drama (critically lauded, but ignored by viewers engorged on reality programming), we learn of the extraordinarily great lengths a school, town, and region go to in order to support their one true love and diversion – football. But what of that small minority of people who are turned off by how seemingly everything in West Texas takes a back seat – earns fourth place on the social importance scale – to the sport? There must be some outlet for their perspective on life and love amidst the dirt and cattle.

Music journalism regularly walks the very thin line that separates the “next big thing” from the “tried and true,” while often falling willingly headlong into one camp or the other. This is the risk one faces when a prominent aspect of one’s job is to spend time listening to pre-release copies of albums from both established and new artists, hoping to be the person or publication that introduces a great new record to the world. I refer to this as “listening forward” and, while I love having access to music before most people and enjoy having a minor voice in discussing new music, I feel it to be a cause for concern. Is there no joy left this industry anymore? Do we actually like listening to music or are we content with the insider accolades conveyed when we scoop someone else?
