Music Night in Space City - 11/14/2008 (Part Two)

The Hood Internet and Car Stereo (Wars) at Boondocks (11pm-2am)
To be totally honest, I didn’t know quite what to expect from this show, Part Two of my evening around Houston. I knew that Boondocks would be full of trendy hipsters and preppy folk, and it was, whether upstairs, downstairs, or outside. I just wasn’t sure how many people would be there because it was simply Friday night or because they actually wanted to see The Hood Internet and Car Stereo (Wars) mash hip-hop and indie rock tracks together all night long. In the end, it really didn’t matter because everyone was having a great time dancing, drinking, and digging the smooth and unceasing flow of outstanding music.

What stood out most from the evening was how much fun the three DJ’s themselves were having in the booth. As opposed to standing behind their laptops (linked-up 12” and 17” Macs), sampler (M Audio Trigger Finger), and mixer looking cocky and smug in their abilities to weave samples together and make people dance, they too were dancing and singing along with the music, serving as an encouragement to those of us (i.e. this guy) who very rarely, if ever, hit a club to go dancing. With tracks ranging from acts like Bun B, R. Kelly, and Lil Wayne to Architecture In Helsinki, Of Montreal, and The Ting Tings, all manner of hit music was chopped, sliced, laced, and spun to an eagerly dancing throng. Granted, there were times that I would stand still in order to look about the room so as to see what was going on (a couple grinding over here, another couple slow dancing and making out over there, and this one guy who bought drinks for and danced with four different women in the course of an hour to no avail), but it proved near impossible to not dance to the aural fun being crafted by Car Stereo (Wars) and ABX and STV SLV of The Hood Internet.
