Eye openers, this blog reading experience. For sure, for sure. Never in my naive days as a parent did I think my seemingly perfect oldest son was listening to “unacceptable” music in secret. Eye openers, indeed.

Other thoughts aside, though, Petra was, is, and probably ever shall be my favorite band. I listen to them still. I have some old “Adam Newton’s favaorite hit compilations” from your high school days that are just truly the best of 90’s Christian-genre music. Petra’s “No Doubt”, or “Just Reach Out” or better yet, “Consuming FIre” - just thinking about the words still turn by heart.

Of course, the mother here still firmly adheres to the principles she tried to instill in her children and completely failed - I still only listen to Christian music. I love it all. Talk about even some of the most cheese-tastic lyrics can be uplifting on a absymmal day.

Of course, you know that John Schlitt’s “Inside of You” is probably my all-time favorite song. One of my regrets as a mother/teacher/administrator of all 4 of my sons school is that I didn’t muster the courage to sing the song for at least one of their graduations. (of course, if that was my only regret after 17 years in Christian education, I’d have it made. hahahaha!!!)

Thanks for the WONDERFUL trip down memory lane, even if my poor deceived memory was given a shock.

It’s not that your memory was deceived, but more that it was enlightened. As “perfect” as I may have been, I still was under the influence of my school/Scout friends and their music. I wanted to be in on their discussions, to be as cool as them, so I listened to that music. And as good as it may have been, it didn’t affect my music-listening as much as Petra did; so take heart in that! Petra - now and forever!

Ahhh… Petra. I didn’t actually listen to the stuff until the early 90’s in college. Before then it was more BeBe and CiCi Winans, throw in some Christian rap (PID and a few others) and you’d have my play list. I will admit to having taken some REAL rap, the up and coming gangster rap that was so popular in the late 80’s, and recording over an old Jimmy Swaggart tape. So, essentially, I had a Jimmy Swaggart covering with NWA as the tape — which worked until my mother decided that she really wanted to listen to some Jimmy. The rest is history.

Rap was my very first rebellious music taste. It wasn’t until college that I began to listen to a lot of 101 KLOL. Back when it was the greatest rock station on the radio and before latino dance music raided and replaced that frequency. It was there that I was introduced to rock from as far back as the early 70’s to the more current 90’s.

Either way — Petra was in that mix quite often. Especially, when I was around my Christian friends. I could listen to Petra and be edgy, have a bit of condemnation from them, but not enough to warrant excommunication should they find out about my enjoyment of radio rock. Anyway, great memories.
