Benard/Worn In Red - Split 7-Inch

Benard/Worn In Red
Split 7-Inch
Alaska/No Breaks; 2008

There will always be a soft spot in my heart for most forms of punk and hardcore music, regardless of what crappy, needless, hyphenated descriptor you might attach to it. The pure, unmitigated musical furor of such bands (especially those of extra high quality) is enough to get me off my feet and onto the nearest soapbox to rail against whatever injustice and/or neglected sociopolitical topic is currently filling up my grey matter. Honestly, we all need someone or something to assist us in pumping our fists up into the air in righteous indignation, so I’m glad that there are groups out there like Benard and Worn In Red to assist us.

These two groups recently joined forces to create a split 7-inch record, with Benard contributing two blistering, blazing tracks and Worn In Red offering up a brooding, blustering one. “Medieval Knievel” and “A Prostitute That Caters Exclusively To Clowns” are both at once overflowing with intense double-time rhythms and impassioned, uplifting vocals, while still being able to showcase the band’s musicianship. These are not the sloppy 90-second punk tracks of some entry-level act. Worn In Red’s offering, “Vital Joys,” possesses a robust, dark strength that serves as the foundation to their overall surly, menacing tone. With any luck, this little release is but a portent of what is to come from these two growling groups.
