Zigmat - Sounds of Machine
Zigmat
Sounds of Machine
Independent; 2008
I am a fan of bands that are full of passion and promise, perpetually pushing themselves to become more than the sum of their parts, to press past their past successes into a bigger and brighter present and future. These are the acts that are constantly playing their music to any size of crowd, in any style of venue, in any locale that will put them on the bill. They do this because they know that unsigned bands must maintain a rigorous show schedule in order to further hone their chops and sharpen their sound. And with the arrival of their second self-released EP, entitled Sounds of Machine, the NYC-based outfit Zigmat display how much they’ve learned in the past year, in that, their regular gigging has taught them much about themselves and the music they want to create. Diverging from the easy Blondie and indie-dance comparisons that abounded on their eponymous debut EP, this girl-fronted act reveals how much they’ve grown as they’ve merged the atmospherics of Air and Goldfrapp with a rich, dark electronic snarl. With the excellent cuts “Fire” and “Machine” opening and closing the project, Monica Rodriguez and her compadres might have toned down a bit of their kinetic energy, but Zigmat’s Sounds of Machine is anything but mechanical.
