Happy Anniversary Mom & Dad!

Category: Life As I See Itdryvetyme @ 01:43

Since this IS my website, I’d like to take a bit of time and wish my parents a Happy 31st Anniversary. They have been a constant source of strength and support to me throughout the years, even during the times when they had no clue what I was doing with my life (usually because I had no clue what to do with my life). I love you both so very much. And since I can only talk about this day from the perspective of one of the children, I’ll let my mother talk about the last 31 years from her perspective (feel free to tease my mom about the horrible ’80s fashions that they were sporting).

Mayfield - Mayfield EP

Category: Music In My Earsdryvetyme @ 09:20

Mayfield
Mayfield EP
Glorious Homeless Records; 2008

There’s a reason that music critics and fans alike fell out of love with grunge around a decade ago. We were all tired of having half-hearted, faux-melancholic music thrust down out throats by copycat bands that were trying to catch some of the money that was being tossed about copiously by record companies. Yet, while it may have taken that decade for that bad taste to be cleansed from our palates, we are rewarded with the music of bands like Mayfield. Hailing from Australia, this intense three-piece seeks to intentionally wipes the grunge slate clean so that fresh music can be made again. Tracks like “The New Black” and “Against The Grain” call to mind the glory days of Stone Temple Pilots, while “Talent Show” comes across (both positively and negatively) as a Nirvana B-side, circa In Utero. Rock music fans tired of the cheesy bluster and theatrical bombast that have polluted hard rock for far too long will find much to love with Mayfield.

Scarlett Johansson - Anywhere I Lay My Head

Scarlett Johansson
Anywhere I Lay My Head
Atco/Rhino; 2008

I have a rather shocking news flash for you. The stars of cinema and television are rather privileged! They are able to do things us average mortals cannot! They have access to opportunities that the rest of us merely dream about. It seems that nothing is outside of their purview – international travel, copious amounts of clothing and accessories for free, the chance to become famous for simply being famous, and the ability to convince major indie rock stars to produce our music. The difference is that, running counter to 2006, which foisted upon us the “music” of Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton, 2008 has given us the delectable little collection of country-pop ditties that is Volume One from She & Him (comprised of Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward) and the curious oddity that is Scarlett Johansson’s Anywhere I Lay My Head (produced by David Sitek of TV On The Radio).

For you see, as opposed to crafting scarily cheesy pop music that’s barely club-worthy, it seems that Ms. Johansson is a tremendous fan of the music of Tom Waits and she sought to issue forth an album of her favorite Tom Waits songs. That’s right – one of the more celebrated young actresses of the 21st century is a fan of an iconic, gravel-voiced folk singer who’s been making music longer than she’s been alive. H-Town Rock: 5/23-25/2008

Category: Music In My Earsdryvetyme @ 08:26

Hey there folks. It seems like I’ve taken a tiny step up in the writing world. The H-Town Rock feature that you have been normally reading in this location on Fridays has been picked up by The Houstonist. I’ll be posting the best and brightest of Houston-area music for each upcoming weekend on Wednesday, thus catching the festivities for Thursday - Sunday. If you don’t feel like heading over there, I’ll still be posting the link to my piece here on Friday mornings as usual (at least for awhile). And without any further ado: H-Town Rock for the weekend of May 23rd-25th, 2008.

Special thanks goes out to Jim Parsons and Jason Bargas for displaying a little faith in my writing abilities. I greatly appreciate this opportunity!
