Houston Music for the Weekend of 5/2-5/4

Category: Music In My Earsdryvetyme @ 08:15

What? Did you think I wouldn’t follow through with this feature? Silly people….

My top selections for live music to go see/feel/experience this weekend are as follows:

Friday, May 2, 2008

Kanye West
Rihanna
N.E.R.D.
Lupe Fiasco
7pm-ish at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, TX

Yes, I’m suggesting that you go see some hip-hop this weekend? Why? Because, even with the immense size of his ego, Kanye is still one of the top MC’s & producers in hip-hop. Moreover, Lupe Fiasco is an amazing talent who’s only beginning to scratch the surface of his potential. So, while you might have to sit through Rihanna’s “Umbrella” (a track that has become annoying in its ubiquity), you will get to hear some amazing music.

The Jonbenet
Sharks and Sailors
O Pioneers!!!
Closet City
Doors at 8pm, Show at 9pm at Walter’s on Washington – 4215 Washington in Houston, TX

Thus, after a enjoying a night of hip-hop in the suburbs (who else but white kids in the ‘burbs could afford those ticket prices), feel free to stop by MY favorite small venue in all of Houston to experience the might of four ferocious punk/hardcore bands. You are required to bang your head at least twice & throw up rock-n-roll horns at least 5 times while attending this show.

Roger Waters
Yes, again at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, TX

Oh, how I intensely dislike the Pavilion, but I’m not sure there would be any other venue in Houston (Toyota Center maybe?) that would do justice to a live Roger Waters show (yes, he of Pink Floyd), especially after his (reportedly) excellent performance at Coachella last weekend. Bring some “substances” and enjoy the light show with your friends!

So did you go see ‘Ye and the Glow In the Dark Tour last weekend? I’m not big on the CWMP grass either but I was really tempted on this one.

A free ticket to go see the ‘Stros with my brother and cousin won out though.

I was so tempted as well, but I didn’t have the money, even for a lawn ticket. Economics won THIS battle. I had an acquaintance that went & she said that it was a GREAT show, even though Lupe Fiasco didn’t really do very much (which she thought was stupid). She confirmed my theory on Kanye: once you accept that he (and most performers of his stature) has a very large ego and set that aside, you have to marvel at his ability to totally rock a stage. I was then quite jealous of her. Alas….
