Nineteen Songs

April 30th, 2008 at 7:59 am (Music In My Ears)

As are so many of my music-related memes, this one comes courtesy of my dear blogosphere friend Courtney. Enjoy!

The rules are as follows:
1. Choose 19 of the songs you like best, regardless of artist or genre.
2. Put them all together in a CD.
3. Make 5 other copies.
4. Post your playlist on your blog.
5. Choose 5 people and send them a copy of your CD each. Send the first copy you made to the one who tagged you.

Here are My Nineteen:
“(Antichrist Television Blues)” - The Arcade Fire
“The Blues Are Still Blue” - Belle & Sebastian
“Shaking Paper” - Cat Power
“Colleen” - Joanna Newsom
“Folsom Prison Blues” - Johnny Cash
“We Are Rock” - Joy Electric
“All My Friends” - LCD Soundsystem
“What’s Going On” - Marvin Gaye
“Irish Blood, English Heart” - Morrissey
“Deep Red Bells” - Neko Case
“Second Best” - Pedro The Lion
“Pretty Persuasion” - R.E.M.
“The National Anthem” - Radiohead
“How Soon Is Now?” - The Smiths
“Give Up The War” - Starflyer 59
“One” - U2
“Resplendent” - Vigilantes Of Love
“You Don’t Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You’re Told)” - The White Stripes
“Misunderstood” - Wilco

Granted, I’m not sure I’m going to compile the actual mixtapes just yet (ya know — funds, time, etc.), but I am passing this meme onto the following folks:
1) Bob
2) Nathan
3) Matty
4) Andrea
5) Lauran

Into It. Over It.

April 29th, 2008 at 9:07 am (Music In My Ears)

This post is dedicated to those of you who might be jonesin’ for some out-of-the-box music thinking. If you have a penchant for music that’s raw and real, you would be well-served to head over to Into It. Over It., a remarkable DIY musical concept-project.

Download Week 30’s track here!

I’ll let the official press release do the talking: “INTO IT. OVER IT., the latest vehicle for Philadelphia native Evan Weiss, has posted its most recent offering, New Careers.

The track is the 30th in an ongoing series which finds Weiss undertaking the ambitious task of writing and recording one new song every week for the span of a year.

52 weeks = 52 songs: a stat even more impressive considering that nothing was composed in advance. With occasional variances, music is written over the weekend, lyrics are penned on Monday or Tuesday and the songs are recorded Wednesday. The finished project is posted on the Into It. Over It. website on Thursday…and the cycle begins again.”

THe BAcksliders - You’re Welcome

April 28th, 2008 at 9:40 am (Music In My Ears)

THe BAcksliders
You’re Welcome
Self-Released; 2008

Ahhh… The irony behind sonic revivalism is that it never gets old. No matter how anachronistic the source material is purported to be or how old-school the production techniques are (or are claimed to be), bands have always looked backwards in their attempts to seem progressive. And you can’t blame them for doing so because good music, no matter what generation produces it, will always be loved, admired, copied, and/or stolen by someone else looking to be the next big thing (or even just an average cover band at a local bar). The only real issue that often arises with bands seeking to find new life in old art forms is when the band becomes so overwhelmed by their influences that they lose themselves inside the sound they’re attempting to create.

And that is the extremely fine line that Dallas, TX-based retro rock outfit The Backsliders walks with their new release You’re Welcome. Seeking to merge the music of ‘50s-‘60s with the bluesy, crooning voice of Kim Pendleton, the group’s sexy Cat Von Dee look-alike front woman, the band had crafted a sound that’s a rollicking blend of two-thirds gritty rock sneer and one-third smoky country heart. The group’s organic, rootsy, back-to-basics approach to making music is more than appealing, but their lack of complexity can often be rather frustrating. The album’s 13 songs cover barely 33 minutes of time, disavowing any chance for some of their songs to build, grow, and take root in the listener’s skull – just as a song might call for a shrieking solo or a driving instrumental jam, it abruptly ends. Nevertheless, from the swagger of “I Got Mine” and “Disguise” to the passion of “You’re Gonna Miss Me” and “Serves You Right,” there is much to like with The Backsliders and You’re Welcome, especially if you’ve got a hankering for an album that sounds as if Patsy Cline were singing for a Buddy Holly-meets-garage-rock group.

Music in Houston for the Weekend

April 25th, 2008 at 1:06 pm (Music In My Ears)

And in a further attempt to shape-and-reshape this space, I’m going to start posting the information for Houston-area shows that I might personally recommend. Why Houston, TX? Well, I live here: that’s why. Duh.

Anyway, first up is an old friend: Krista Vossler. Fans of dreamy piano folk/pop will love what they hear from this Austin, TX-based singer-songwriter. She’s currently doing some regional touring with her friend Luke Kalloch. Enjoy!

Saturday, April 26th at 9:00pm
Notsuoh
314 Main
Houston, TX
They should be on from 9-10:30pm. Luke and Krista may well be mixing it up, so you should arrive around 9pm. Two other bands are playing as well and probably go on after Luke & Krista.

Sunday, April 27th at 7:00pm
Walter’s on Washington
4215 Washington
Houston, TX
Luke goes on at 7pm and Krista goes on at 8pm. It’s 21 and up, but it’s FREE!
Arthur Yoria, Tody Castillo and then Murray Hammond of the Old 97s finish out the night.

“Caught In A Crosswalk” - Baskervilles

April 25th, 2008 at 8:13 am (Music In My Ears)

In my ever-evolving quest to improve the quality and condition of this website, I’m going to start posting links to music whenever they’re sent my way (and approved) by my various PR & music contacts.

First up: “Caught In A Crosswalk” by Baskervilles.

From the official press release: “NYC’s Brit-poppin’, new-wavin’, indie-rockers, BASKERVILLES are working their way straight to the top of the pops with their forthcoming album, Twilight (Secret Crush), produced by Mitch Easter and due out on June 3. Twilight is sure to be the feel good summer album of 2008.”

Enjoy!
