The Six: The Music I Like & Why

Category: Uncategorizeddryvetyme @ 01:08

Having recently been called upon by a new friend of mine to provide an introduction to music beyond that which is (over-)played on commercial radio stations, I’ve spent the past couple of months compiling and collecting a variety of songs, styles, and artists onto a six-album set for this friend to peruse. At the completion of this stage of the listening experience, this friend asked me to create a listener profile, based upon the feedback this friend gave to me after listening through all of the songs. After I presented my thoughts on what I thought my friend was most attracted to musically, my friend asked me to craft a similar list for myself; thus, what you see below is my expanded thoughts & ideas upon the original list I composed.

Furthermore, I am considering drawing up similar lists that detail what I value in terms of literature & cinema and why such things are worthy of value in my eyes. Therefore, dear reader, as you peruse my list, I would appreciate reading through your perspectives on what I’ve offered here. I encourage you to create your own versions of The Six, regardless of what it might be within you being examined. Feel free to link to me, or provide me links to your postings of The Six in your life. And now, without any further ado, THE SIX!

1) I like straight-ahead, four-on-the-floor, drums-and-guitars-based rock n’ roll. I make no apologies that I like strong music, whether is classic rock, metal, or indie rock. While it’s important to have singable lyrics (how else do you rock out in the car or with your friends?), it’s vital that this music makes you just want to run through a brick wall because of how it gets you so amped up and unbelievably excited. Mute Math & Eisley - Live in Houston, TX!

Mute Math & Eisley
Warehouse Live!
Houston, TX
November 11, 2007

UPDATE!! This review can be found as a part of this week’s edition of Burnside Writers Collective. Head over there & show them your appreciation for posting my material.

I spent 6 years of my life working in an establishment that most patrons would typically refer to as a Christian bookstore. Now, we sold more than books — we sold all manner of Christian-themed paraphernalia, from the tawdry and mundane to the over-hyped and glitzy. Whether we were peddling the hot-selling pieces of cutesy plastic (affectionately named “Jesus Junk” and “Christian Crap”), promoting the latest and greatest Study Bible, or pimping the newest and hottest names in the realm of fiction, non-fiction (do the names LaHaye or Lucado ring a bell?), or Contemporary Christian Music (CCM), there hasn’t been a trend in the past decade of Contemporary Cultural Christianity (CCC) that I haven’t personally read about, learned about, or sold. And while I admittedly entered this magical world of Christian retail with the purest of intentions and gobs of naivety, a naivety that was crushed to bits long ago, I still hold this place in my heart for the people and products I served for so long.

Thus, if there’s one trend that has grabbed both CCM and CCC by their respective throats and has yet to let go, it would be the penchant for taking any and every possible marketing and style trend from mainstream culture and tweaking it just enough so that it’s safe for parents and kids to enjoy. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to make products that entire families are able to enjoy, there is something inherently shady and tasteless with stealing/borrowing/co-opting the intellectual property rights and artistic vision of another in order to clean it up and pass it off as your own. Yet, this is exactly why CCM and CCC have done for at least the last 15-20 years: see where the musical, literary, and general entertainment winds are blowing and soften them up enough to sell to Christians who are afraid to leave their cultural ghettos. Specifically, in this insane search for cheap cultural relevance, CCM has sought to promote singers, groups, and bands that, once you get past their sugary-safe lyrics, are mere shells of the mainstream acts they’re attempting to mimic. However, when one of these artists seeks out a wider audience for their music, they regularly maligned for “crossing over” and/or selling out (their soul) for money and temporal fame in the “secular” market.

Nevertheless, the past 5 years have seen a crop of artists rise from the outskirts of CCM and declare that while they are firmly Christian, they desire to make stunning music and bring that music to a wider audience, an audience that accepts their material. You see, for whatever reason — lyrics that are less overt with their meaning, a sound that’s not easily marketed on a Christian-specific radio station, or an unwillingness to play CCM’s game — these acts never found a place for their band within the confines of CCM and their fans love them for it. So, on Sunday evening, November 11th, 2007, I had the opportunity to see two of the bands that better exemplify this movement take the stage together: Eisley and Mute Math. The Three Visionaries

Category: Uncategorizeddryvetyme @ 01:27

From the beautiful mind that is David Hayward, I present to you the cartoon and my subsequent comment recently posted on his blog Naked Pastor. Upon seeing my comment to his cartoon, he asked if I could post it here on my blog, and, since I was rather honored that he would ask such of me, I readily complied. Thus, without any further ado, enjoy!

He casually peers in the mirror and is startled sees all three men staring back at him.

“Damn it!” he exclaims! “I thought I was beyond such desires at this stage of my journey!”

He shakes his head vigorously, hoping to shake such a profane vision from his sight. He lifts his head slowly towards the mirror and there they are, staring back at him, mocking him with their lustful cravings.

“Damn it again!” he explodes. “Why did I think I could remove these on my own? How can I eliminate these from my sight? What can I do to clean up my thoughts, heart, and mind? Is this some kind of ridiculous test God? I don’t appreciate this!”

He pounds the wall, turns away, and exits the room, teasing himself with the hope that, if he removes the mirror of self-examination from his life, he won’t have to deal with the fact that those three men are quite ever-present in his day-to-day struggle.

To Andy

Category: Uncategorizeddryvetyme @ 01:56

To most folks in America, November 11th always marks Veteran’s Day, the day set aside to commemorate everyone who has served this nation as a member of the military. But for me, while growing up, this day always marked the birthday of my paternal grandfather, a man who was a member of the military (serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II) and who would be 90 years old today had he not passed away a decade ago. Thus, I wrote this poem Sunday evening at church, reminiscing over my recollections of this man. Enjoy.

To Andy

Scraps of wood
Carven faces
Whispers of color
Sawdust covers all
Moods and rooms
Memories and recollections
Pasts, presents, and futures
Twinkling eyes and wrinkled fedora
Smiles in corners of mouths
Hints of what might have been

Still seen in the mind’s eye
Mischievous grin
Becomes
Weary visage
In a mere moment
Laughter
Turns into
Scowl
Not because of anger
But because of nature

Never understood
Never realized
Always frustrated
I feel I never knew you
Yet
I have since heard the stories
I know more of The Story
Glimpses appear

I thank you for your children
I thank you for your gifts
And while I’m not quite sure
I know what I miss about you
I know I do.
