Let’s face it – the ears of the average music listener have been assaulted with every manner of sonic revivalism, as groups seek to strip mine the recent past, if only to learn how to write a catchy riff or a danceable tune. It seems everyone, from record executives to VJ’s, DJ’s, and reviewers, is quick to latch onto the notion that the best way to describe a contemporary band’s sound is to compare it to bands that are 20-50 years old. Just because a band has a dark synth feel doesn’t mean that they’ve actually paid attention to the seminal New Wave acts from the early ‘80s. And just because a group employs three-part male harmonies and tremolo-laden guitar sounds doesn’t mean that they have any right to describe themselves as being influenced by various ‘60s surf rock outfits.
But what happens when a band sets out to fully immerse themselves in the thick history of their influences, studiously absorbing every possible nuance, posture, pose, and aural tweak, not so that they might steal from their forebears, but that their music would be an homage to the past?
