A Bit O’ Music News

All of these come courtesy of Pitchfork.

1) A Gift From the Arcade Fire, Coming This Saturday — in the form of this website. I’m all tingly with anticipation!

2) Neko Case Readies Trio of Reissues

3) Wu-Tang Clears First Legal Beatles Sample — What this means is that, for the first time, a Beatles song has been permitted to be sampled by someone other than a member of the Beatles or the executor of one of the deceased member’s estates. Notice that they chose a George Harrison song (”While My Guitar Gently Weeps”) over a Lennon or McCartney song, which I figure was easier to obtain since a) McCartney is still alive & b) Yoko Ono would have been a rather feisty bird to have contended with when asking permission. Nevertheless, while I’m not sure if any other DJ’s & hip-hop producers will have any success obtaining sampling rights to any songs from the Beatles, it seems that RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan has been successful. Props to him & his negotiating skills!

4) And then on Thursday, there was this retraction and/or explanation to the news in #3.

5) But guess what?!?!? While he had to cut some dates from his still-ongoing tour, Morrissey revealed that he has the material for his new record completely written and is hoping to release it in September 2008. Shoplifters of the World Unite!
