Touring is a weighty, heady experience for an independent band, because the entire undertaking is an exercise in contending with contrasting emotions. The band is exhilarated at having the opportunity to play their music for people outside their immediate fanbase, yet they’re filled with trepidation over having to share very close, tight-knit spaces with the same few people for subsequent days, weeks, and months. While being able to travel from town to town, city to city, and state to state across these here United States is an exciting potentiality, the band has to be able to find enough money to pay for gas, food, and lodging in between tour stops, inculcating enough worry and anxiety to give everyone involved an ulcer. In the end, touring test the true mettle of an independent band – skins are thickened, hearts are displayed, credits are ruined, friends are made, and music is played.
Thus, on a late September night in Houston, Texas, where it was actually comfortable to stand outside and chat, Hollywood Black and The Western Civilization, both of Mia Kat Empire, staged their respective tour kick-off shows at Walter’s On Washington. These local favorites have spent the past year playing shows, writing material, recording albums, writing more material, and playing more shows, all in a concentrated effort to chase after their dreams. Both bands will be spending the month of October visiting and imparting their talent and musicianship upon the denizens of the South, East, and Midwest. Hollywood Black will be joined by Elbows As Weapons, residents of Nashville, TN, on The Ugly Truth Tour, while The Western Civilization set off on their own to spread their poppy goodness to anyone who will listen.
