I don’t like guns — I really don’t — and there are time when I’m not sure why. Outside of the occasional firing of a .22 or B-B gun at a Cub Scout event, I didn’t grow up around guns, so one could say that I’ve never had the greatest exposure to them. However, I did grow up in the South, where guns, hunting, hunters, and hunting culture are part and parcel of the general environment. I had more than a few friends who spent nearly all of their Fall weekends at their family’s deer lease, hoping against hope that this would be the year they’d be able to shoot that elusive 12-point buck. And it never was really of interest to me, though I could be regularly found throughout childhood playing some version of Army, spies, or something of that nature. Even back when I was attempting to make a career with my degree in Political Science, I aspired to find employment gathering information for the State Department or the C.I.A. — nothing where carrying a loaded weapon would be a job requirement. Guns simply have never held any fascination for me.

So, when I enter into a theater to watch a movie like 3:10 To Yuma, I’m forced to consider whether or not I can even begin to relate to this storyline. Continue reading “3:10 To Yuma”
