Let’s be honest with ourselves here: traditional radio is dead and has been so for years. Oh, it still exists in small pockets here, there, and yon – the lower parts of the FM dial (where college and public radio stations are located) and certain programs on “new†radio (i.e. XM, Sirius, and the like) – but in general, radio exists primarily to sell a easily marketable sound, which in turn sells an easily marketable image, which in turn makes tremendous amounts of bank for the large radio station and record company conglomerates. It has become cliché to mock, malign, and/or attack the bands and genres that have reaped the benefits of such a money-driven system, but, if you really look into things, you’ll realize that even the big-name bands make little or nothing from their record and radio contracts. They have to tour relentlessly to make a dime, and, once their “sound†has been solidified, they aren’t allowed any creative control over their music, because that might inhibit and cripple the bottom line. Money has finally trumped the music and we’ve all been watching the slow spiral of death, whether we acknowledge it or not.
