One of my more annoying traits is my tendency to make fun of how old I’m getting and how my ever-increasing age disallows me the privilege of enjoying some of my favorite things in life. Take hardcore shows for instance. Should I really be spending my evenings going to shows where I’m older than the average attendee by 8 or so years? So what if most of the band members are close to my age? At least they’re on the stage playing the music. It’s OK for them to be in their mid-20’s; it’s their fans who fall into the 15- to 21-years-old age bracket. Nevertheless, I just don’t think I care anymore, so I’m increasingly becoming more comfortable with being the old guy at hardcore/hard rock shows. At least when I go up to someone in the band I can conduct an intelligent and musically informed conversation with them.
(And besides, when you go to a hardcore show in a Morrissey t-shirt, you had better be able to defend yourself in the pit and know your music well.)
Thus, with all of that in mind, I jumped in a car with 2 of my brothers and 2 of our mutual friends where we drove 4 hours to see Maylene & The Sons of Disaster (MASOD) at The Door in Dallas, TX, located deep with band/club-friendly Deep Ellum.
