New Book Project

Category: Uncategorizeddryvetyme @ 8:01 pm

So, I’m having this conversation with a close friend of mine and we get onto the subject of dreams. He mentioned that he had been experiencing some rather strange dreams recently, though he said that he was a regular dreamer. I then brought up that I’ve never been one to have dreams on any kind of regular basis, much less remember my dreams or having a recurring series of dreams. Except for this one time in high school…. During the midst of my adolescence, I frequently dreamt that my friends and I often went on wide-ranging adventures, traversing the wilderness, exploring, and doing whatever we felt like in the great outdoors.

And oh yeah…. Rebecca St. James was there along with us. Continue reading “New Book Project”

If there’s one thing that really frustrates music critics, it’s bands who blur the line(s) between different genres, yet think that they are stylistic purists. These are bands who feel that they are crafting music that pays homage to their influences, yet we all know that they’re a bunch of dirty, no-talent copycats who are making music for all of the wrong reasons. We’ve all heard them – they recycle the same riffs, rip off their stage moves, and replenish the same tired lyrical material without any hint of original thought. (And no, I’m not talking about bands from Drive Thru Records and their other emo friends). Frankly, I get tired of hearing the same song over and over again from a multiplicity of bands, with no one staking their claim to or owning their sounds, content to make music that sells (i.e., music that’s not worth anything as art). I want someone stand up and let their voice be heard, someone who intentionally displays respect for their predecessors, yet proudly says, with no hint of irony, “This is who we are as a band!” Does this band exist?

And in response to my clarion call, the men of Maylene & the Sons of Distaster (MASOD) rise to the occasion. Sweeping the greasy hair from their eyes and donning their suits of dirty denim & flannel, these talented gentlemen are dedicated adherents to and fierce propagators of the new breed of Southern rock. Here’s this – I’m a white guy & I can’t dance. Oh, one of the benefits of being a musician is that you have rhythm, but that doesn’t mean that I can move my body well and do so in time with the music in a way that’s pleasing to the eye (especially to the female eye). Nevertheless, whether it’s bouncing, shaking, shimmying, or just playing some invisible instrument in the air (it doesn’t matter which one, so take your pick), I do like music that makes me move. And this, in the end, means that I like danceable music, regardless of what style it might be, no matter that it might the infectious hooks of Justin Timberlake, the sonic superiority of Kraftwerk, the analog audio artistry of Joy Electric, or the sassy sounds of Lily Allen. So, while I might not be able to dance nowhere near as well as my friend/roommate/landlord who’s a DJ, I like coming across albums that make me wish I could tear up a dance floor.

So, when I first came across James Murphy’s inherent ability to create a ridiculously catchy beat without sinking to making a simple four-on-the-floor dance track, I was quite amazed at how LCD Soundsystem became so popular, so quickly. Continue reading “LCD Soundsystem — Sound of Silver”

To New Mornings(For Resurrection Sunday)

tomb-and-the-light.jpg

Dew sprinkled on grass
Catches and fastens to the hems of their garments.
Dirt grips their feet and sandal leather.
They have come early,
Earlier than their normal time of waking.
They know that their Beloved’s body
Is at rest,
Now undergoing time’s decomposing embrace.
It would be wonderful to care for His body,
They surmise;
Covering it with scents and spices,
Hoping to mask His stench of death in their noses.

It feels like the sting of death in their hearts
Will never pass away.
And the pain of losing Him for all time
Forever will remain.

Heads bowed low, hearts torn open,
They fail to see that the tomb
Has been drastically changed.
But lifting their heads,
So that they make ponder who is to open his grave,
They are shocked to see the stone rolled away,
His resting place disturbed.

Guts ripped out, all hope is lost,
Their world has faded away.
Their Saviour has gone, their Jesus is stolen,
All color becomes gray.

Where has He gone?
Where have they taken Him?
Haven’t they done enough already
When they killed him just three days ago?
What could be left to do?

But then a voice
Splits the silence of the garden
And the grief within their souls.
“Why do you linger in a place
Where your Saviour is not?
He has risen, just like He said He would.
Go tell the others. He is waiting for you.”

Joy breaks forth from mourning.
No longer does He lay.
Our clouds pushed aside by His sunshine.
This is truly resurrection day.

We Are Undone(For Holy Saturday)

Category: Uncategorizeddryvetyme @ 11:41 am

He is:
Taken
Removed
Crushed
Broken
Departed
Deceased
Mourned
Revered
Loved.

He is our:
Son
Friend
Compatriot
Fellow Traveler
Teacher
Rabbi
Messiah
Christ.

He is gone from us.
Jesus is gone from us!

And we are undone.

He spoke of this at length.
He told us this would happen.
Yet we never believed.
But how could anyone even want to believe
That their promised Messiah would leave them,
That Jesus would die.

We are truly undone.
