Casts, Collections, & Choices

Category: Uncategorizeddryvetyme @ 09:17

Strange characters
Fractured facades
Tainted substances
With
Bruised & bleeding egos

Hurt is usually bifurcated, split into two ugly pieces:
Sudden, serious assaults
Or
Repetitive, bothersome sorties

It’s the difference between:
Hiroshima & Verdun
Bomb blasts & siege engines
Desolation & attrition
Shock/awe v. guerillas

Which one affects us the most?
Which one cuts us the deepest?
Which one is the worst?
Which one makes us long bleeders?

Would I prefer to just be smacked in the face by a really big fist?
Or
Would I rather have some pinch my face over & over again?

And why does it seem that I have to make this choice interminably?
What if I’ve grown tired of all of this deciding?

More Lily!

Category: Uncategorizeddryvetyme @ 09:16

Well, the wonderful folks at Pitchfork have made my day. They’ve posted the most recent version of their “Guest List” column featuring my favorite sarcastic sweetheart — Lily Allen! And just because I’m feeling frisky, here’s a link to an interview with Lily from November 2006.

Enjoy!

High Fidelity Hi-Jinks!

There are few works of fiction & cinematic creations that spark my writing drive, make me laugh, squirt out a few tears, and compel me to re-examine, redefine, and seriously expand my record collection as High Fidelity. Originally the masterwork of acclaimed British writer/essayist Nick Hornby, it was further developed into a movie (by audiophile John Cusack & his Chicago-area theater buddies) starring John Cusack, Jack Black, Joan Cusack, Lisa Bonet, & Tim Robbins, among others. And yes, while the book is better than the movie (as it should be), the movie follows the book quite closely, leaving little out (apart from the much-loved scene from the book where the spurned wife attempts to sell Rob Fleming/Gordon her husband’s ridiculously rare collection of 45’s, LP’s, and other music memorabilia for a mere $50).

So, in honor the place that the book & movie hold in my heart, I’m holding the first ever “High Fidelity Hi-Jinks” night at my house. We’ll gather together to view the film, all while drinking cheap wine & eating bad bachelor food in homage to the main character’s diet. Afterwards, everyone will be discussing their Top Five Favorite Sad Pop Songs. Thus, everyone is being charged to pull together those songs onto a blank disc & bring them along to share with the crowd.

A Collection Because

Category: Uncategorizeddryvetyme @ 19:50

Pebbles
Small fragments from a
Much larger whole,
Shards
Chipped & broken,
Once part of an immense,
Hardened mass.
Pieces of our past that we choose
To keep around.
Why?
Because,
For some reason,
It’s easier to hold fast
Than to let go:
Grasping instead of loosing,
Hoarding rather than releasing.
Why?
Because,
If we have enough stones in our pocket,
We’ll have enough ammo
To inflict as much pain as possible
On others
&
On ourselves.
Because,
We think that,
Even if we’re not dragging around some immense
Boulder,
Then we’re doing OK,
That we’re free of the weight.
But too often
We lug around substantial
Collections
Bags filled with the refuse of our
Past,
Hoping that we’ll find a way to
Wash these rocks & do so in
Private,
Wanting no one to see all that we must clean
&
All that we must throw away.
