Upon Wedded Bliss(For David & Antoinette)

Category: Uncategorizeddryvetyme @ 9:14 am

Looking down upon the beauty of the day:
the assembled throng,
arrayed in their most elegant finery,
gazes toward the two becoming one,
smiles upon the couple being joined together,
and blesses the union & unity of these two beloved souls.

And though this joy has come to others before,
for time immemorial,
in this instant,
in this moment in time,
this love is yours & yours alone.

Might that you have each other,
hold each other,
& love each other
in all time,
with all time,
& for all time.

God has joined you & no one shall tear it asunder.

Blessings.

“Come now & join the feast
From the greatest to the very least
Come now & join the feast
Right here in the belly of the beast.”
– Shane Claiborne

Amidst a series of days filled with ice, sleet, & freezing rain (something so rare in Houston, TX), a great crowd gathered to hear the words of someone who’s come to be akin to a strange mix of Old Testament prophet & John The Baptist to many in the Low Protestant/Evangelical world. Can you really have too much of a good thing? I know, I know – “moderation in all things.” It’s a concept that has its roots in many religious traditions, but what’s so wrong with a bit of indulgence in something really excellent? If something is of superior quality, shouldn’t I want to get all of it that I can? I can’t help but think that I’d be better served by finding a way to obtain any & every scrap of goodness possible. But then again, I’ve been wrong before…

So, when I heard that Austin City Limits was releasing a live album that Neko Case (sultry-voiced solo artist who also moonlights with the Vancouver band The New Pornographers), I was rather excited. Continue reading “Neko Case — Live From Austin, TX”

The New Worlds Order

Category: Uncategorizeddryvetyme @ 9:44 am

This article (linked below in the title) comes from Pitchfork and is one of the more thoughtful, curious, & (individually & corporately) introspective articles I’ve yet read on our contemporary addiction to all things pop culture.

Please read & comment as you deem appropriate. Dialogue is always appreciated.

Column: Get That Out Of Your Mouth #31
The New Worlds Order
Column by Chris Dahlen

I’m a committed, committable, always-strung-out culture junkie. And it’s getting easier every day to find my fix. Whereas in the past, TV shows stayed on the TV, news came in the newspaper, and films had a beginning, middle, and an end, the stories I follow today have no boundaries. Whether I’m catching up with a teen melodrama or struggling to interpret the latest news from Iraq, I’m getting updates in daily dribs and drabs, through old school broadcasts, or RSS feeds, or fictional characters who text my cell phone. And every new gadget I get just taps me into a new supply. Continue reading “The New Worlds Order”

There are few disappointments in life that are worse than those we experience as a result of having overwhelmingly high expectations brought down in a fiery crash. And sadly, we’ve all had to go through such emotionally gut-wrenching events and recovering from these circumstances can be quite difficult. Let me list a few of mine – the release of Crystal Pepsi at the age of 13 (my first time to be let down by massive media hype), having one of your favorite bands/singers release an album that pales in comparison to the rest of their collection (think Zooropa by U2), seeing one of your favorite movie series totally botch their return to the screen (think Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace), and watching a movie based upon a really great book tank when it finally releases in the theaters (that’s what this review will be all about).

(What? Did you think I was going to talk about the time when I finally had enough guts to ask out a woman totally out of my league, and she actually said yes, but then I acted like a stuttering, incoherent, socially awkward nerd boy all night long? Why would I want to reveal that kind of emotionally scarring to people I don’t know? Silly readers…) Continue reading “Eragon”
